Guiding Principles of Health and Safety for Opening Schools

  • Education for students, staff, and community on self-assessing for symptoms of COVID-19

  • Healthy practices: hand washing, social distancing, wearing masks/face coverings

  • Consistent student groups when feasible

  • Fewer transitions during school day

  • Additional cleaning/sanitization practices during the school day

  • Nurse in each school building

  • Use of outdoor spaces when feasible, open windows for ventilation when weather allows

(This list is not all of the work that we will be doing to keep staff and students safe.)

Transportation

Busing

  • Students will be required to wear a facemask while boarding/riding the school bus to and from school.

Parent Transportation

  • Parents are encouraged to provide transportation for their child/children to and from school, when feasible for their family.

Masks

  • Masks are required for students and staff

  • Masks will be provided for anyone that needs one

  • Students can bring their own mask from home

  • Masks breaks will be provided at regular intervals throughout the day

    • 6’ Distancing will be required during mask breaks

Entry/Dismissal

Arrival

  • A staff member will be at the entrance/s for bus and parent drop off in order to guide and direct students to their classrooms.

    • Parent Drop-Off will be at the main entrance Door 1

      • All notes from parents to the office will be collected at the main entrance as students are dropped-off

      • Late arrivals will be required to sign their student in using a clipboard located outside the main entrance.

    • Bus Drop-Off will be at the lower playground entrance Door 4

  • Upon entering the building, students will use the closest hand sanitizer station, grab a bagged breakfast and make their way to their classroom.

    • Breakfast Carts will be located at both entrances.

Dismissal

  • Student Pick-Up 2:10-2:30

    • Students will be dismissed from the classroom.

    • Parents will drive-up to the lower playground entrance Door 4 where a staff member will greet them and radio the main office.

    • Parents are encouraged to have a sign on the dash of their car with the following information:

      • Student Name

      • Grade

      • Teacher Name

    • The main office staff will notify the classroom when a student is ready to be dismissed.

  • Bus Dismissal 2:30 - 3:30

    • Bus Drivers will notify the main office of their anticipated arrival

    • Classroom Teachers will dismiss students by bus # as buses arrive to Door 2.

  • Walkers 2:40

    • Walkers will be dismissed by the classroom teacher from the classroom at 2:40

    • Students will exit the building using Door 3, 6, 7

Breakfast/Lunch

  • Breakfast will be offered in “to go” bags that can be picked up during arrival and taken to the classroom

  • Lunch will be provided in the classroom

    • Lunch can be eaten outside as a cohort when weather conditions allow for it

  • Use of hand sanitizer and hand washing at start of all meals

Daily Health Strategies

Students and Staff

  • Masks required for students and staff

  • Hand hygiene stations will be placed at key locations in the building as well as all classrooms

  • Students and staff will regularly use handwashing and sanitation stations

  • A designated area will be provided for a nurse to be in the building during school hours

  • Students who express any ill symptoms will report to the nurses station and not to the office

Cleaning Routines

  • Regularly Scheduled Cleaning/Disinfecting of desks, keyboards, and screens

  • Classrooms will be cleaned regularly and each time the room is empty

  • Custodial staff will routinely clean highly touched surfaces after school hours

Classroom/Academics

  • Staff and students will be trained in the areas of physical distancing, handwashing, respiratory etiquette and mask use to mitigate exposure

  • Desks, Ipads, Laptops and all other screens/devices will be disinfected regularly

    • Scheduled desk sanitation during school day during transitions

    • Custodial staff will routinely clean highly touched surfaces after school hours

  • Desks -- will be arranged to account for physical distancing

    • Desks will face in the same direction and will be spaced out as much as possible

    • 3’ Distancing while wearing and seated at a desk

    • Use of physical distancing when using tables

  • Integrate good hygiene practices into instruction and classroom expectations

  • Shared materials and spaces will be limited

    • Student belongings will be stored separately

    • The sharing of supplies will be avoided

  • Outside food in the classroom for celebrations such as birthdays, parties, etc. will be avoided

  • Students and staff will use personal water bottles and water bottle filling stations vs. hallway/classroom drinking fountains

  • Every teacher will have Google Classroom set up for their classroom or course sections and will be utilized for remote learning levels

  • Facemasks will be required in the classroom

  • Numbers going to bathroom at the same time will be limited to 2-3 from the same cohort

  • Outdoor space will be offered for learning when weather permitting

  • Distance learning training will be provided for students - Google Classroom, technology programs/platforms

  • Increased ventilation and circulation of outdoor air into the classroom will be utilized as much as possible

Recess/PE

  • If Outdoors and participating in physical activities, without masks, activities can occur with 14 feet of distance between individuals.

  • If Outdoors and participating in physical activities, with masks, activities can occur with 6 feet of distance between individuals.

  • If indoors and participating in physical activities, with masks required, these activities can occur with 6 feet of distance between individuals.

  • Classroom cohorts will remain together in designated playground assigned zones/areas.

Transitions

  • Students will maintain 6 ft. distance when possible

  • Use of floor stickers for directional flow and waiting areas

Masks

On July 17, 2020, the MDOE, in consultation with the governor’s office, required that all school systems in the state of Maine require the use of masks/face coverings during the school day and on buses. Adults, including educators, administrators, and all support staff, are required to wear a mask/face covering.

Students age two and above are required to wear a mask/face covering that covers their nose and mouth. Masks/face coverings must be worn by all students on the bus.

Students are encouraged to use their own masks but masks will be provided for students and staff who do not have masks.

**Face shields may be an alternative for those students with documented medical or behavioral challenges who are unable to wear masks/face coverings. The same applies to staff with documented medical or other health reasons for being unable to wear face coverings. (Updated 8/11/20) a. Face shields worn in place of a face covering must extend below the chin and back to the ears.

Students will have regular mask “breaks” during the school day, and will be able to take their masks off when they are socially distanced in their student cohort groups during outside recess, snack and meal times.

Entry/Dismissal

AM Student Drop Off (Bus/Parent) 7:20-8:10

  • Main/Office Entrance will be for Pre-K and K students. Staff will assist students entering the building and guiding them to their classrooms. Staff will be monitoring the Pre-K and K rooms.

  • 1st Grade Hall/Computer Entrance will be for first, second, and third grade students. Staff will assist/direct students to their classrooms. Staff will supervise grades 1-3 classrooms. (Students will be in their classrooms and will be offered breakfast)

  • Cafeteria Entrance will be for the fourth and fifth grade students. Staff will supervise those classrooms as students enter and have breakfast.


PM Dismissal:

Student Pick up 2:10-2:30

Pre-K and K - List generated to check off as students go with parents

Staff (Pre-K) will walk students to the sidewalk for parent pick up.

Staff will walk K students to the sidewalk for parent pick up.

Staff from (grade 1), Staff from (grade 2), Staff from (grade 3) will walk students out for parent pick up (Entrance by 1st grade) Clipboard with student’s names will be provided.

Staff will walk 4th and 5th grade students out of the cafeteria entrance for parent pick up. Clipboard with student’s names will be provided.


Early Bus 2:30 (Pre-K and K teachers will walk their early bus students out as they have been doing for years) Staff will stay and supervise the rooms with late bus students.


Announcements will be made to dismiss students by bus numbers by grade level. This will help reduce the amount of traffic at a given time. Ed Techs will help manage traffic flow in the halls as students leave the building.


Late bus 2:45-3:15

Students will remain in their rooms until buses begin to return to the school. Announcements will be made for dismissal of students by grade levels/grade spans (depending on numbers) as buses arrive.

**Review of this plan might allow for an afternoon recess while waiting for late buses as numbers will permit.

Breakfast/Lunch

Breakfast Carts will be located near the classrooms for students to easily access. Hand sanitizer stations will be available in the classrooms and several locations throughout the building. While eating breakfast and lunch, students will be socially distanced six feet apart.


Lunch Carts will also be brought to the classrooms to minimize student transitions. Cohorts of students can eat outside as weather permits.

Hand washing and sanitizing will be done before eating and after eating.

    • It would be helpful for parents/guardians to have their child’s name and teacher’s name written on a piece of paper. Our goal is that this will allow the staff person to read the information on the paper you are holding and then radio the office with names for dismissal. We hope this procedure will help make the dismissal process as efficient and timely as possible.

Bus Transportation

AM Student Bus Dismissal – 11:00 – 11:15

PM Bus Dismissal – 2:30 – 3:30

    • Classroom Teachers will dismiss students by bus # as buses arrive.

    • Each grade level/wing will be assigned Ed. Techs/ Staff members to escort students to the bus pick-up entrance to ensure social distancing.

Breakfast/Lunch

  • The school will offer breakfast in “to go” bags that can be picked up during arrival and taken to classroom or other assigned area.

  • Students will eat breakfast in their classrooms or other assigned areas in the morning

  • Students will engage in individual activities at their assigned desk.

    • Read a book, Coloring book, Ipad Games, etc.

  • Breakfast is free to all students that qualify for free or reduced lunch.

    • Parents whose student/s are full pay, please make sure you let the school know in a written note if you do not want your child to have breakfast at school. This prevents you from getting a bill for a breakfast/s that you do not wish for your child to have.

  • We will offer options to eat outside when feasible.

  • Handwashing and sanitizing will be done before and after meals.

Daily Health Strategies

Students and Staff

  • Each day, before entering the building, staff and students must complete a self-assessment for COVID-19 symptoms. Certain responses will require staff and students to remain home and not attend school.

  • Masks must be worn by everyone upon entering the school building, in the hallways, in the classrooms and other school building areas.

  • Hand sanitizer will be at the main entrance for students, staff, and others that need to enter our building.

  • Hand sanitizer will be in every classroom, office, and other key locations throughout the building.

  • Staff and students will use hand sanitizer when entering the building, entering a classroom, before and after eating, before and after using bathroom facilities, use of any other equipment/manipulatives shared by others, before leaving and returning to the classroom for any other transitions during the day and before leaving the building to get onto the bus or pick-up by a parent/guardian.

  • There will be a full-time nurse in our building this year.

  • There will be an isolation area for any student or staff member exhibiting symptoms.

Masks

  • Masks or face shields are required for students and staff.

  • Masks or face shields will be provided for anyone that needs one.

  • Students are encouraged to bring their own masks from home.

  • Masks will not be required when outside.

  • Students will have regular mask breaks during the school day.

Cleaning Routines

  • Classroom desks and other classroom surface areas will be disinfected throughout the day at appropriate transitions.

  • Custodial staff will routinely clean highly touched surfaces throughout the school operational hours after school hours.

  • Staff and students will use hand sanitizer when entering the building, entering a classroom, before and after eating, wash hands with soap and water after use of the bathroom facilities, before and after all transitions, and use of any equipment or other materials/supplies that are shared or used by others.

  • Frequent hand washing/hand sanitizing will be required by students and staff.

  • Supplies that are shared will be cleaned/disinfected after each use.

Classroom

  • Students will be trained in the areas of physical distancing, handwashing, respiratory etiquette and face mask use to mitigate exposure

  • Facemasks will be required in the classroom except while eating or at recess. Mask breaks will be given throughout the school day for short periods of time, when students can be socially distant.

  • Individual or small groups of 2-3 students for bathroom breaks.

  • Students will use a lanyard provided by the school in order to hold their facemask when the facemask is removed for breakfast, lunch and recess times and some PE activities.

    • Students will place their lanyard on an assigned hook or other teacher designated area in the classroom.

  • Desks will be arranged to account for social distancing

  • We will not be able to have food to be brought into the classroom for celebrations such as birthdays, parties, etc.

  • Each classroom area will have cup dispensers with cups for students to use at the classroom sink area.

    • Students will be encouraging to drink plenty of water during the day to assist with good health habits.

  • Teachers will utilize outdoor space for learning when appropriate and when weather permits.

  • Students should have their own pencil box/case to keep their pencils, crayons, scissors, and other tools for learning that may be requested by the teacher.

    • The school will provide these if a child does not have their own.

  • Students will be trained for movement in the hallway/classroom.

  • Students will use hand sanitizer each time entering and prior to leaving the classroom.

  • For this year, we will not be planning any field trips, attend assemblies and other large group gatherings.

  • Students will be provided outside breaks as feasible throughout the morning and afternoon in order for students to remove facemasks.

Recess

    • Students will wear face masks as they transition from the classroom to the playground. Students will wear lanyards to hold their masks while on the playground.

    • Students are not required to wear masks during recess time.

    • Students will be at recess with their class cohort

Transitions

  • Students will be trained for movement/transition in the hallway and other areas of the building.

    • Keep to the right side while walking to and from a location.

    • Adhere to social distance procedures.

    • Wear facemask at all times, except during outdoor recess times at at meal times.

  • If you are at school to pick your child up for an appointment, take your child home due to illness, injury, etc. then please call prior to leaving your vehicle, so we can have your child get ready and meet you at the main entrance area in a timely fashion. Parents/guardians will need to wait outside the main entrance door.

  • If you need to enter the building we ask that you wear a facemask and maintain 6 ft. distance when possible.

Visitors/Volunteers

  • No unscheduled visitors are allowed in the school/classrooms.

  • We will not be planning to have guest speakers/presenters this year.

  • Classroom volunteers must be scheduled to visit the classroom, and must be approved by the building administrator.

  • Visitors will be encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance and will be limited to critically important visitors determined by the building principal.

  • All Meetings will be held through virtual means when possible (ie. IEP’s, 504’s, Parent Meetings, Staff Meetings)

Morning Arrival:

  • Upon arriving at school in the morning, students will be allowed to get breakfast in the cafeteria.

  • Students arriving before 7:50 will wait in the cafeteria seated with social distancing. If the cafeteria exceeds capacity, students will go to the upper gym.

  • At 7:50 students will go to their period one classrooms.

Daily Schedule:

  • Given our schedule at PIHS reducing student transitions is difficult. In order to address this issue we will focus on designating traffic patterns throughout the building as well as stressing the importance of health practices.

  • PIHS will change from a 7 period to 4 period schedule for the 2020-21 school year.

Bell Schedule:

  • PIHS follows the same four periods per day schedule Monday through Friday.

  • Students arriving before 7:50 report to the cafeteria

Transitions

  • Homerooms have been eliminated from the schedule for 2020-21.

  • Hallways will be divided into two “lanes” to create better flow during transitions.

  • Narrow stair wells will be designated as one way during transitions.

  • Students will wear protective face masks during transitions.

  • Hand sanitizer will be provided at the end of each class period for students prior to transitioning.

  • Lockers will be assigned. Students will be encouraged to minimize their use.

  • Bathrooms- students will be allowed bathroom breaks with no more than 3 students entering a bathroom at a given time.

End of the day

  • Students that have their own transportation or are being picked up will be dismissed at 2:40.

  • Parents will need to pick up their student at the main entrance.

  • Students will remain in their period 4 classrooms until their bus is called by the main office.

  • At 3:00 pm late bus students will go to the cafeteria.

Lunch

  • Students will be assigned either a Study Hall or Lunch period in their period 2 and 3 classrooms. (See Schedule Above).

  • Lunches will be delivered to students in their period 2 (typically grades 11 and 12) and 3 classrooms (typically grades 9 and 10). Some students will be assigned to eat in the cafeteria or Upper gym to allow for social distancing in the classrooms during lunch.

  • Students in Grades 11 and 12 will still be allowed to leave campus for lunch.

  • Delivery of food from outside will not be permitted.

Daily Health Strategies

Students and Staff

  • Students and staff will be required to wear protective masks at all times except when eating breakfast or lunch.

  • Regular hand washing for both students and staff is required.

  • Student desks and shared materials will be regularly sanitized during the day.

  • Hand sanitizer dispensers- will be provided in each classroom and students will utilize them prior to leaving the classroom.

  • Students exhibiting symptoms will report to the Health office and will be isolated in a designated area. They will wear a mask until leaving the building and parents will be notified.

  • The Health office will be available for both students and staff with health concerns.

  • Students can utilize the water bottle dispensers but not the water bubblers.

  • Delivery of outside food to the high school will not be permitted.

Classroom/Academics

Classroom Procedures/Policies:

  • Students and staff will wear face masks in the classroom.

  • Student seating will be arranged so that students face in one direction.

  • Desks will be spaced as far apart as possible while accommodating student numbers.

  • Teachers need to be mindful regarding small group work as well as students sharing equipment or materials. Additional student materials may be purchased to limit sharing.

  • At the end of each class period, sanitizing wipes will be provided to clean student desks and shared materials.

Academics:

  • For the 2020-21 school year, the school schedule will move to a block semester schedule with each student having four courses in a semester. Each class will be 80 minutes long.

  • Full credit for traditionally year-long courses will be awarded at the end of the semester.

  • Students will be assigned 4 new courses for the second semester.

Guiding Principles of Health and Safety for Opening Schools

(from Maine CDC, Maine Department of Education, CDC Guide for Schools)

  • Education for students, staff, and community on self-assessing for symptoms of COVID-19

  • Healthy practices: hand washing, social distancing, wearing masks/face coverings

  • Consistent student groups when feasible

  • Fewer transitions during school day

  • Additional cleaning/sanitization practices during the school day

  • Nurse in each school building

  • Use of outdoor spaces when feasible, open windows for ventilation when weather allows

Transportation

Busing

MSAD#1 will continue to offer transportation for students to and from school. Bus capacity will be limited and face masks/coverings will be required.

Parent Transportation

This year, MSAD#1 will be asking parents to transport their children to and from school if possible. If possible, students should not arrive before 7:50AM, however, parents may begin dropping off students no earlier than 7:20AM. There will be designated areas for each grade level. Parents can begin student pick-up at 2:40PM. There will be specific pick-up locations for each grade level.

  • If possible, students should not arrive at school before 7:50 am.

Face Masks/Coverings

  • Masks or face shields are required for students and staff.

  • Masks or face shields will be provided for anyone that needs one.

  • Students are encouraged to bring their own masks from home.

  • Masks will not be required when outside.

  • Students will have regular mask breaks during the school day.

Entry/Dismissal

Morning Arrival

Upon entering the school, students will be required to wear a face mask/covering. Students arriving between 7:30-7:50AM will proceed to grade-level specific areas. Students arriving after 7:50AM will proceed directly to their period 1 classrooms. Any student arriving after 8:05AM is required to proceed to the office for admittance.

Students Leaving/Returning During the School Day

Students leaving during the school day will be required to report to the Main Office. Parents will be required to sign out their child using the sign-out sheet by the Main Entrance in the Parent Pick-Up area. Upon returning to school, students must report back to the Main Office for admittance.

Dismissal

Dismissal at the end of the day will take place at 2:40PM. All students will remain in their period 6 classrooms until dismissed via the intercom.

Breakfast/Lunch

Breakfast

Breakfast will be held in Room 30A and Room 30B with students being seated 6-feet apart. Students will pick up a bag breakfast and beverage in the hallway outside the cafeteria. Once finished eating, students will proceed to their respective grade level area.

Lunch

Lunch will be held in classrooms and alternative locations as needed to meet the appropriate social-distancing recommendations. Students will order their school lunch in the morning and it will be delivered to their respective classrooms.

Daily Health Strategies

Students and Staff

  • Following CDC guidelines, everyone in the building will be required to wear a face mask/covering except when eating breakfast or lunch.

  • Hand sanitizing stations will be provided in each classroom with the expectation of students using them upon leaving the classroom.

  • Hand washing protocols will be reinforced.

  • Social distancing will be expected whenever possible.

  • Students exhibiting symptoms of any illness will report to the Health Office. In the event that a student needs to go home, the student will be isolated in a designated area, continue wearing their face mask/covering, and parents will be notified.

  • The Health Office will be available to students and staff. Parents/guardians with questions may call as well (764.8105).

  • Students may access water bottle filling stations, but water fountains will not be accessible.

Cleaning Routines

  • Additional classroom and building cleaning routines will be established with the custodial staff.

Classrooms & Academics

  • Students will continue to be offered learning opportunities in all subject areas - core and exploratory.

  • There will be no Study Hall offering this year. The minutes from this traditional 40-minute block of time have been reallocated into classes throughout the school day.

  • Band and Chorus will occur in small groups during Learning Workshop time.

  • Students will remain in the same cohort group throughout the day to the extent that they can and still be provided with their assigned programming.

  • Desks will be all facing in the same direction and will be spaced as far apart as possible.

  • Sharing of materials will be at a minimum.

  • Sanitizing will take place at the end of the class period to include student desks and any shared items.

Recess

  • Students will be outside as much as possible this year. It will be important that students dress appropriately for the weather.

Transitions

  • Transitions will be kept to a minimum.

  • Students and staff will be required to wear face masks/coverings during any and all transitions throughout the day.

  • Hallways will be divided into two lanes to improve flow. Stairwells will be designated as one way.

  • Hand sanitizing stations will be available throughout the building and in each classroom.

  • Lockers will be assigned, but students will be allowed to carry their backpacks as necessary.

  • Bathrooms will be available for student use with a maximum of 3-4 students at a given time.
